Aviation Group Overview (PDF)

The group is composed of the following standing committees addressing research and innovation related to aviation.  The Aviation Group Executive Board (AV000), consisting of the appointed chairs of the group standing techincal committees, coordinates their work.

AVIATION ADMINISTRATION AND PLANNING (AV011)

Scope: This committee is concerned with research and innovation related to cooperative aspects of aviation administration and planning activities at the local, regional, state, national and global levels. It includes governance participation and stakeholder involvement, and the relationships between aviation planning and other planning, policy, and regulatory processes. 

AVIATION MARKET ECONOMICS AND ANALYSIS (AV012) 

Scope: This committee is concerned with research and innovation related to economic and financial issues associated with aircraft operators, airports and operating authorities, the aerospace community, air travelers and shippers, all levels of government and the general public. These concerns include the development and application of improved methodologies for forecasting aviation demand and activity, and the relationship of forecasting to system decision-making. 

AIRPORT LANDSIDE OPERATIONS AND PLANNING (AV013)

Scope: This committee is concerned with research and innovation related to the planning, design, operation, and maintenance of the airport landside encompassing the area between points where passengers and goods enter airports to points, including terminals, where they board and disembark aircraft. The committee is also concerned with the transportation of passengers between their local origin or destination, and the airport.

MANAGING AIRFIELD AND AIRSPACE OPERATIONS (AV014)

Scope: This committee is concerned with research and innovation related to the development, evaluation, and application of metrics, techniques and processes for managing airfield and airspace operations. This will include analyzing the existing system and how new applications such as commercial space operations, uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), and advanced air mobility (AAM) can be accommodated in a safe and efficient manner.

AIRCRAFT COMPATIBILITY WITH AIRPORT INFRASTRUCTURE (AV016)

Scope: This committee is concerned with research and innovation related to aircraft and their compatibility with airport airside areas, which include the regions that aircraft interface with during ground movements: airport aprons, taxiways, runways, and their environs.

SAFETY AND SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS IN AVIATION (AV017)

Scope: This committee is concerned with research and innovation related to commercial and general aviation safety, airport security, and emergency management that includes planned and actual responses to safety incidents and accidents; criminal and terrorist activity; and human-caused and natural disasters that may affect or be affected by aviation.
